The Grand Egyptian Museum

               The Grand Egyptian Museum

The idea for the Grand Egyptian Museum began in the 1990s, and in 2002, the foundation stone was laid for the museum project, which is to be built on a prime site overlooking the timeless Giza Pyramids. The Egyptian government, under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Architects, announced an international architectural competition for the best museum design. The winning design was submitted by Heneghan Peng Architects of Ireland. Its design is based on the concept that the sun's rays, emanating from the apex of the three pyramids, will form a conical mass representing the Grand Egyptian Museum. Construction of the museum began in May 2005 with the site preparation and leveling. In 2006, the largest center for the restoration of antiquities in the Middle East was established, dedicated to the restoration, preservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the artifacts slated for display in the museum's galleries. The center was inaugurated in 2010.

The museum building, spanning over 300,000 square meters, was completed in 2021. It includes numerous exhibition halls, each larger than many existing museums in Egypt and the world. The museum is considered one of the most important and greatest achievements of modern Egypt. It was established as a comprehensive global cultural, civilizational, and entertainment landmark, and as the premier destination for anyone interested in ancient Egyptian heritage. As the largest museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of ancient Egyptian civilization, it houses a vast collection of distinctive and unique artifacts, including the treasures of the golden king Tutankhamun, displayed in their entirety for the first time since the discovery of his tomb in November 1922. The museum also features the collection of Queen Hetepheres, mother of King Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, as well as the Khufu Boat Museum, and various other archaeological artifacts spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era.
