One of these areas, in the west of the country, consists of the border regions of Europe, where there are typical types of mixed forests, and the other is located in eastern Ukraine, where the steppe species live in prosperity. In forest areas of the country it is not uncommon to find lynxes, wolves, wild boars, and martens, as well as many other similar species

More than 6,600 species of fungi (including lichen species formation) have been recorded from Ukraine, but this figure is far from complete. The real number of all fungal species occurring in Ukraine, including those that have not yet been registered, is likely to be much higher, given the generally accepted estimate that only about 7% of all fungi worldwide have so far been discovered. Although the amount of available information is still very small, a first effort was made to estimate the number of fungal species endemic to Ukraine, and these 2,217 species were initially identified

The Ukrainian economy is ranked second within the Soviet Union, being an important industrial and agricultural component of the country's planned economy. Ukraine's economy collapsed severely in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The daily life of a Ukrainian citizen has become a struggle for survival. Some in rural areas have succeeded in mitigating the impact of the crisis by growing their own food, often working two or more jobs and the barter economy has emerged to buy basic necessities

In 1991, the government liberalized most prices to combat the widespread shortage of products, and it was successful in overcoming the problem. Meanwhile, the government continued to support state-owned agriculture and industries by uncovered monetary emission. Monetary policies in the early 1990s pushed inflation to hyperinflationary levels. In 1993, Ukraine held the world record for inflation in a calendar year. Those who live on a steady income have suffered most
