In recent years, the government has moved to reduce reliance on the manufacture and export of electronics through the development of the service sector, as well as the biotechnology, chemical and petrochemical industries. It drove small Singapore residents and dependence on foreign markets and suppliers toward economic openness, free trade and free markets. This, as well as government policies that promote economic development, were fundamental factors in Singapore's historically strong economic performance

The government has continued an outward-looking, export-oriented economic policy that encourages intraregional flows of trade and investment. Singapore has approached trade policy to work with like-minded countries such as Australia to promote the issue of free trade within international forums, particularly through the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as through regional fora such as ASEAN and APEC. Another integral part of Singapore's trade policy is its approach to developing bilateral free trade agreements with a host of countries, including Australia

Singaporean society is made up of 80% Chinese, 14% Malay, 8% Indian, and 1% Eurasian and other ethnic group. The indigenous people of Singapore were Malay hunters, but after the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles and the establishment of a British trading center, Singapore became a magnet for immigrants and merchants, as immigrants from China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Middle East sought a better life for themselves and their families. Despite the marriages between members of different ethnic groups over the years, Singaporean ethnic groups have maintained their cultural identities while continuing to develop as an essential part of society
